Mazzy
Mazzy is an interactive lettering system that transforms letters into mazes. Instead of reading letters at a glance, viewers navigate through them—revealing each letter only by finding a path.
The system invites participation. Each maze has a defined structure, but the final letterform depends on how a person solves it. Line quality, pacing, and decision-making shape the result, allowing the same letter to appear differently from one person to the next. Reading becomes a physical and cognitive experience, and authorship is shared between designer and audience.
Mazzy is designed to scale across different lengths of expression.
-
Between Us explores single letters through a customizable artist book, where pages can be arranged to compose private messages.
-
Mazzy Card applies the system to words and short phrases in a compact, tactile format.
-
Between the Lines extends the idea to sentences, using poster-scale mazes where reading unfolds over time and space.
Tested through public interaction across multiple formats, Mazzy demonstrates how typography can move beyond static form—becoming a process shaped by use, interpretation, and human variation.

Each letter is printed in four color variations. Blank pages are included to function as typographic spaces.

During public interaction, participants solved individual letter pages from the book. Variations in line quality, path choice, and drawing rhythm produced distinct letterforms from the same maze structure, demonstrating how individual execution directly shapes the visual outcome of each letter.

Between Us
Between Us is a customizable artist book constructed entirely from Mazzy letterforms. Each page contains a single maze that resolves into one letter through navigation.
The book allows a message to be composed by sequencing individual letter pages. A flexible binding system enables pages to be reordered or reassembled, reinforcing the modular nature of the lettering system.
The message is revealed only through completion of each maze, positioning the reader as an active participant in forming the letterforms rather than a passive reader of predefined type.

Mazzy Card
Mazzy Card applies the lettering system to small-format printed ephemera. Each card contains a single maze with one entrance and one exit; the solved path reveals a short, pre-composed word or phrase.
With content fixed, the emphasis shifts to the act of drawing and the formal qualities of the resulting letterforms, testing legibility and execution at a reduced scale.

Between the Lines
Between the Lines is an interactive poster that applies the Mazzy lettering system to sentence-level text. Letterforms are concealed within a maze structure and emerge gradually through navigation.
At poster scale, reading becomes spatial and durational, extending the system into a public context and altering how letters are encountered, completed, and understood.
