Make Love Mahjong

Make Love mahjong is a toy for designers or anyone who has an interest in typography. It helps people get to know typefaces by the sense of touch and could be played by multiple players. 



We know that young babies learn about the world mostly by the sense of touch. How can other senses contribute to a better understanding of an existing knowledge? This game is an typography experiment on the topic.

Typography not only servers for communication, but also brings letters to an artistic level. It is hard to deny that each typeface has its own personality. However, the interaction is only visually. What if people learn about typography through a different perspective of view? Do they still recognize them by touching instead of looking?




MAKE LOVE is a game basing on the form of Mahjong, in which the players touch the tiles rather than look at them. There are 48 tiles in total, constituted by 12 typefaces. The goal is to collect four tiles in the same typeface (which are also set in the same color).


The rule is similar to traditional mahjong and the aim is to collect letter L, O, V, E in the same typeface. When drawing a tile, the player should not look what is on the tile, but guess the letter by touching, then decide whether to take it or abandon it. The game acquires basic knowledge of typography.



The mahjong tiles apply a sandwich structure: cork with laser cut letter — color paper — hardboard — cork, which enables them to remain the similar weight of traditional mahjong but transit a soft and friendly feel of touch. All the layers and letters were cut by laser and then glued together. After that, the side of the tiles had been colored.


The size of the tile and depth of letter are carefully concerned by testing varies of prototypes. The surface of tile and size of the letter should be larger enough for players to touch; the depth of the letter also determines the difficulty of the game. The perfect dimension should provide the most details of the letter.


The drawer is made of craft paper. The outer box is made of cardboard. The top face of the box is made of two thinner boards which have a real piece of silk stocking in between. The window gives customers an impression of the texture before purchasing. The belt makes sure the entire package sealed.


By testing within designers, the result shows that players get to noticed the details of some typefaces that they have ignored before and has proofed that other senses help to build a more comprehensive perspective of view.
